On an ideal Saturday night, what would you find yourself doing? I would be recovering from a gigantic bike ride and eating my hubby’s homemade pizza, or something super healthy like salmon and chickpea pasta with tons of mushrooms and spinach (disclaimer: I don’t like fish but it makes me feel amazing and staves off migraines). After dinner I love to hang out with our four boys, maybe throw the Frisbee or play some basketball, then relax with a hot tub followed by some Alone, River Monsters, or Naked and Afraid.
Tell us about your very first yoga class, as a student. My first yoga class was at a studio in Bloomington, Indiana. It was an incredibly difficult time in my life, and I was suffering from debilitating panic attacks and anxiety that prevented me from exercising, driving, and landed me twice in the emergency room. As much as I knew yoga would help in managing the situation long term, I couldn’t steel myself to stay through the entire duration of the class and I left halfway through. This experience led me to really wanting to support people struggling with panic, anxiety, and PTSD through yoga.
Who most inspires you? I am inspired by people who are resilient, who take tough situations and flip them into a positive experiences, and who commit to live creatively. I strive to emulate people that refuse to set limits for themselves, and continue to grow and take on challenges while defying perceptions and odds related to what they should or shouldn’t be able to do, and focus on making world a better place in the way they live their lives and treat other people.
What’s your favorite food? I must repeat 😁: Gregg’s pizza! Growing up in the Midwest, Happy Joe’s taco pizza was my FAVORITE and Gregg has figured out a delicious replication of that, even better than the original!
What’s your favorite yoga pose and why? Crescent Moon pose is my favorite yoga pose because of the opening in the hip flexors and quadriceps and the upper back bending opportunities. Running and cycling tightens up the front of my legs in a big way. Stretching those muscles in Crescent Moon keeps hip pain at bay and the beautiful back bend that can follow the arc of the arms reminds me to keep my heart open in that pose and always.
